I am not entirely sure of the accuracy regarding the SPECmarks on a MIPS R4400
@150 Mhz. Instead of this:
> CPU MHz Sint92 Sfp92
> -------------------------------------
> R4400 150 94.5 105.2
> Pentium 100 100.0 80.6
I beleive the R4400's spec out a little more like this (at least according
to SGI literature, MIPS being a subsidiary of SGI):
R4400 150 86.0 93.2
Even the latest offering in the form of the R4400SC (primary cache of 16K inst.
and data, 1MB secondary cache) is still a bit slower than what Mark posted:
R4400SC 150 91.7 97.5
Though the following still remains true:
> The R4400 has the advantage because rendering is inherently more floating
> point intensive. NEC currently has a 133MHz R4400 WinNT box that goes for
> $3400. This is considerably better than $5k for a Pentium system.
I can't imagine SGI not utilizing the MIPS chips to their fullest, but I suppose
code optimization, a different OS, and so forth might crank out a few more
SPECmarks than SGI currently does.
